Mayor Bongat shields wife from #NagaLeaks controversy
Naga City Mayor John Bongat has defended his wife from allegations that she’s the person behind the #NagaLeaks controversy which has targeted Vice President Leni Robredo.
According to a Bicol Standard report Monday (March 13), Mayor Bongat came out after the weekly flag ceremony and gave a speech categorically stating that his wife had nothing to do with the viral Facebook posts linking Robredo to illegal drug allegations.
This, despite admitting that his wife is a supporter of President Rodrigo Duterte’s administration.
Mrs. Bongat, for her part, thanked the people who continue to “believe in her integrity” amid the #NagaLeaks controversy, which is primarily being disseminated by a Facebook page called “We are Collective.”
The same report said that Mrs. Bongat “will put on hold the legal pursuit against the persons allegedly behind this crime that has tarnished and continues to tarnish [her] good name and that of her family’s.”
She reportedly eyeing the mayor’s seat in the 2019 local elections.
Robredo’s late husband, former Interior Secretary Jesse Robredo, is a former Naga mayor.
