Aasa kami kay Gloria: Lagman, et al to bank on Lakas-CMD’s opposition to death penalty
Congressional opposition bloc, the “Magnificent 7” is hoping that a coalition partner of the supermajority could be relied upon to deliver “no” votes against the death penalty restoration bill when the right time comes.
This coalition partner is none other than the Lakas-CMD, the party that House Deputy Speaker and former president Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo leads.
Magnificent 7 member, Albay Rep. Edcel Lagman said in a press conference Tuesday (December 13) that the bloc welcomes Arroyo’s opposition of the death penalty measure.
“We welcome the position of the former president that she is steadfast in the crusade against the death penalty,” said Lagman, a former Minority Leader.
The Bicolano politiko noted that it was under Arroyo’s administration in 2006 when capital punishment was suspended.
“We are banking that all those under her party will vote against death penalty,” Lagman said.
The Magnificent 7 has been opposing the move to reimplement the death penalty, saying it will further the culture of death in the country under the Duterte administration.
